São Leopoldo City

São Leopoldo is an important Brazilian industrial city located in the south state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Geography: It occupies a total area of 103.9 km² (around 80 km² urban area) at about 30 km from the State Capital, Porto Alegre. The climate is sub-tropical, with temperatures varying from 2°C minimum at winter to more than 40°C maximum during summer time. Summers are fairly dry.

History: Established on 25 July of 1824 by German immigrants, São Leopoldo is considered the cradle of German culture in Brazil, that is to say, it is the first official city designed by the national Brazilian governor to start the German plan of immigration in the country. It had, in 2006, a population of approximately 210000. São Leopoldo is one of the 13 cities along the Rota Romântica ('Romantic Route'), a touristic scenic route that runs from the State Capital towards the Serra Gaúcha.

Boat Martim Pescador: The boat was built to be a room floating. Through a walk by Sinos River, it is possible to know the journey experienced by German immigrants, who came to the city sailing by the river.

Sinodal School: Founded on 19/05/1936 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Synod Riograndense, is located in Morro do Espelho (Mirror Mountain) in a beautiful green area. There you can visit the Museum of the Synod. The building of the former boarding school was erected in 1937 and the former boarding school in 1947.

Train Museum: Old railway station São Leopoldo and first station built in Rio Grande do Sul. The Center for Preservation of the History of railway in the state was founded on 9 March of 1985. Portrays the story of the time when Maria Fumaça (Maria Smoke) charmed population.
